Caring for the environment

Here at Cornerstone Alpaca Stud we make caring and protecting our environment a priority.  We try to eliminate the use of unecessary products and behaviour that will create or encourage a waste problem.

We eliminate the use of chemicals where possible such as using natural certified products for washing, cleaning, toilets etc in the shop, house and when treating the alpacas.

Process:
- Buy earth wise or similar products for cleaning
- Natural organic fertilisers for paddocks
- Zinc in water troughs to precent Facial Exema, not medicine
- Liquid coffee, ground Coffee and tea leftovers are recycled into the garden area as fertiliser
- Organic Lime, seaweed and natural fertilisers are used on paddocks
- Rainwater is captured in water tanks for public/personal use (UV Filter) and animal troughs

This means that alpaca farming is completely safe and natural for the environment.

Reusing Alpaca Fibre for bird feeders - Our birds love it!

Alpaca fibre has many wonderful qualities such as:

- being hollow and light
- soft, luxurious and silky
- 3 x warmer than sheep wool
- Chemical free and eco friendly
- Moisture resistant
- Fire resistant

Thus being the perfect material for our birds to use for building their nests.  Keeps them nice and warm as well as dry.

Green Alpacas?

Yes, Alpacas are one of the most eco friendly animals on the planet. Unlike horses or cows, Alpacas don't have hooves but rather 2 toes with a soft pad under each toe which reduces environment impact.  Alpacas are also shorn once a year for their quality eco-friendly fibre.
Recycling:

Our aim here at Cornerstone Alpaca Stud is to:

- Restrict the unnecessary use of products where possible
- Eliminate or restrict the use of plastic and undegradable items
- Re-use and upcycle items in all areas where possible
- Encourage recycling and upcycling behaviour

We aim to prevent the waste of potentially useful materials and reduce the consumption of fresh raw materials, thereby reducing energy usage, air pollution and water pollution.

We use:
- Recycled bags for gift wrapping and packaging of products
- LED bulbs are used in the shop and Granero (The Barn) to save energy
- Old baths are used as water troughs for alpacas to drink from
- When doing renovations, we upcycle items!

Alpaca Droppings

Alpaca manure is considered a rich soil conditioner. It improves the soil quality and its ability to retain water. It is also great for plants. Alpacas also use a common area for their droppings which keeps the paddocks nice a clean and environmentally friendly.
